The story of Lucien
The root is Roman: Lucius was one of the most common Latin praenomina, and Lucianus was the family name grown from it. It was carried by Lucian of Samosata, the Greek-writing satirist of the second century, and by Lucian of Antioch, the theologian martyred in the early fourth. Through the Church the name reached Gaul — Saint Lucien is honored as the first bishop of Beauvais — and in French mouths Lucianus wore down to Lucien. It came into American records with French-speaking families, and it has never fully left them.

Pronouncing Lucien
loo-SEE-en
That is the usual American reading. In French it is closer to lü-SYAN, with the last syllable nasal and no separate "ee". Some English speakers also say LOO-shun, on the pattern of Lucius. All three are in real use, so it helps to pick one and say it first when you introduce him.

The trade-off
- An unbroken written record from Roman antiquity through French to the present — no reconstruction, no guesswork about where it came from.
- Recognizable across Romance languages and beyond: Lucian, Luciano, Lucjan all read as the same name.
- The Luc- opening is already familiar in English through Lucas, Luke and Lucy, so people can hear the spelling on the first try.
- Comes with a ready short form, Luc, that works as a full name in its own right.
- Three pronunciations circulate in the US — loo-SEE-en, LOO-shun and the French lü-SYAN. Expect to correct people, gently and often.
- Lucian is a live competing spelling, so there will be a fair amount of "one letter off" mail.
- It shares the Latin root lux with Lucifer, and a few people make that jump out loud. It is a passing comment rather than a real obstacle — Lucy, Lucas and Lucia carry the same root without trouble.
- Rare enough in American classrooms that he is unlikely to meet another, which some children enjoy and others would rather not.
