Eliezer is Hebrew, and the Bible explains it twice over — once as the name of the servant Abraham names as his heir-in-waiting in Genesis, once as the name Moses gives his second son in Exodus, with the meaning stated in the same verse. The Greek translators of the Hebrew Bible and the later Latin ones left it essentially unchanged, so the spelling has traveled almost intact. Jewish families have used it without interruption since antiquity; Yiddish-speaking communities in Eastern Europe wore it down to Leizer and Lazer. Spanish-speaking families in Latin America and the Caribbean took it up from the Bible as well, which is part of why it turns up strongly in New York, New Jersey and Texas.
