The story of Lucie
The root is the Latin lux, light, which produced the Roman name Lucius and its feminine Lucia. Lucia became one of the most widely venerated names in Christian Europe after the fourth-century martyr Lucy of Syracuse, whose December feast is still marked with candlelight processions in Sweden. As Latin gave way to the vernaculars, the ending softened: Lucia in Italy and Spain, Lucy in England, and Lucie in France and in Czech-speaking lands, where it has long been a staple. The French form travels well in American records and still charts in France today.

The trade-off
- The sound is already familiar to every English speaker through Lucy, so it needs no explaining aloud.
- Short forms are ready-made and centuries old: Lu, Lulu, Luce.
- One of the most widely shared names in Europe, with a recognizable form in French, Czech, Italian, Spanish, Polish and German.
- A documented line running from Latin through the medieval saint's cult to the present day, unbroken.
- It will be written as Lucy by most people who hear it before they see it. That is a lifetime of small corrections, though the sound never changes.
- The pronunciation splits by language — LOO-see in American English, loo-SEE in French, and something different again in Czech. Families with roots in more than one of those may want to agree on a version.
- Lucia, Lucy, Lucille and Luciana all sit close by, so relatives may drift between them.
