Kaya
Feminine · “depends on the road: 'rock”
Kaya is given to both — 10,314 girls and 662 boys since 1880. See Kaya as a boy nameSee other names given to both
Kaya is one of those short names that several unrelated languages arrived at on their own: a Turkish word for rock, a Scandinavian shortening of Katarina, a Japanese name written with more than one set of characters. In American records it has held a quiet, unbroken place for decades — familiar enough to read at a glance, uncommon enough that most people will meet only one.

From Aikaterinē to Kaya
The story of Kaya
The clearest documented line runs through Katherine: the Greek Aikaterinē became Katarina in Scandinavia and Katarzyna in Poland, and both were clipped to Kaja, spelled Kaia and Kaya as often as not. Quite separately, Turkish carries kaya as an everyday word for rock and as one of its most widespread surnames, and Japanese has its own Kaya written in kanji. Southern Korea gave the name Kaya to a confederacy of small states in the early centuries of the first millennium, still called Kaya or Gaya in histories today. The American spelling arrived without a single ancestor, then settled in and stayed.

depends on the road: 'rock, cliff' in Turkish; a short form of Katarina in Scandinavian use
Turkish kaya means rock or cliff, and Kaya is a common Turkish surname and men's given name. In Norway, Denmark, Poland and Slovenia, Kaja and Kaia are established short forms of Katarina or Katarzyna, and Kaya is the same name in another spelling. In Japan, Kaya is written with several different character combinations, so the meaning varies with the writing. English-language name lists have long attached a Hopi reading, 'elder sister', which is difficult to verify and should be treated with care.

Pronouncing Kaya
KY-uh
The usual American reading rhymes with the second half of 'papaya'. Turkish and Japanese speakers say KAH-yah, with both vowels open, and some families in the US use that pronunciation too — worth deciding which one you want before the name is announced.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Nannette test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Kaya's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Nannette climbed just as high around 1963, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Nannette's path sketches the road Kaya is walking now.
Kaya sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Two syllables, four letters, and no silent parts — easy to say on first sight and easy for a child to write early.
- Works in Turkish, Japanese, Korean and Scandinavian mouths as well as English, which is rare for so short a name.
- Has been on American records continuously for decades without ever crowding a classroom.
- Comes with a ready-made short form in Kay, itself a long-established name.
- Sits in a recognizable spelling family — Kaia, Kaja, Kaiya — so it reads as a real name rather than an invention.
- The spelling will need repeating. Kaia, Kaja, Kaiya and Kaya all exist, and people who know one will default to it.
- Two pronunciations circulate: KY-uh and KAH-yah. Neither is wrong, but you will be correcting one of them for years.
- In Turkish, Kaya is a man's name and a very common surname. American records treat it as a girl's name, and both facts are true at once — something to know rather than to worry about.
- It sounds close to Maya, Kayla and Kaia, so it may be misheard more often than a name this uncommon would suggest.
