From the Cornish lowen, 'happy' or 'joyful' — the word in Nadelik Lowen, Cornish for Merry Christmas. A second route reads Lowen as a German surname from Löwe, 'lion', or as an English form of Owen. All three are in circulation; the Cornish reading is the one most bearers give.

The trade-off
- The joy meaning is transparent and belongs to a genuinely revived language.
- The Cornish revival is a remarkable and well-documented story in itself.
- Two clean syllables with no pronunciation risk.
- The origin is split three ways and only the Cornish route gives 'joy'.
- It is thoroughly unisex in Cornwall and in American use.
- Owen and Rowan are both close enough to cause confusion.
