Where it comes from

Our story of Lovey

The nineteenth-century American South registered a whole class of names that no other period would have written down: Lovey, Dovie, Precious, Pleasant, Charity, Sweetie, Baby. What they share is that they are things a family says to a child rather than names in any older sense, and the birth record simply caught them. Some were formal enough to survive — Charity and Grace are still names — and some were not. Lovey is in the second group; its American record thins after 1900 and is essentially gone by 1930. Its most visible twentieth-century bearer is fictional and comic: Lovey Howell on Gilligan's Island, whose name is a pet form her husband uses, which is exactly what the word is.

Meaning

A term of endearment; my love

From English love, from Old English lufu, with the affectionate -ey ending. The reading is the ordinary English one: lovey is a term of endearment, still current in British English and largely archaic in American. It is not a shortening of any other name, though it appears alongside Lovie and Lovica in the records.

Two syllables, stress on the first, exactly as the English endearment. It is not LOH-vee, which is the commonest misreading.

Lovey sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2025, with 22 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It is an ordinary English word and never has to be spelled out aloud.
  • Everyone can say it once told which vowel it takes.
  • Five letters and two syllables keep it compact.
What to consider
  • It is a term of endearment rather than a name, which reads oddly on an adult.
  • It is regularly misread as LOH-vee on first sight.
  • It is strongly dated to the years before 1920.
