The story of Lou
Louis was the great royal name of France, and Louise its feminine. Both reached America through French settlement and through general English use. Lou was the ordinary spoken clipping for both sexes, and American families registered it outright for daughters from the 1910s — often as the second half of a compound, in Mary Lou, Betty Lou and Bobbie Lou. Feminine Lou peaked around 1930.
Meaning
famous warrior
Through Louise and Louis, from the Germanic hlud, 'famous', and wig, 'war' or 'battle'. The same compound gives the German Ludwig and the Frankish Chlodovech, which is also the source of Clovis. Both elements are ordinary words and the compound is transparent.
