Where it comes from

The story of Loreen

The Treaty of Verdun in 843 split Charlemagne's empire between three grandsons: Charles took the west, Louis the east, and Lothar the middle, a long strip from the North Sea to Italy that had no geographical or linguistic coherence at all. Lothar's son inherited the northern part, and it was called Lotharingia after him. The kingdom collapsed almost immediately, but the name stayed on the territory, becoming Lorraine in French and Lothringen in German, and the land itself was fought over between the two languages for the next thousand years. The Cross of Lorraine, adopted by the Free French in 1940, comes from the same region. The given name arrived in English in the nineteenth century from the place.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Loreen went to 8 girls in 2025, but Loren is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 63, which makes it the 897th most-given girls’ name of the year — 10,020 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 25,512 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 200,908 for Loreen itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
