Lonny is the tail end of a longer name given a friendly ending, and the longer name is almost certainly Alonzo. American English has always been willing to take the last syllables of a name rather than the first — Beth from Elizabeth, Trina from Katrina — and Lon is that habit applied to a Spanish name that had settled comfortably into English by the nineteenth century.

Where it comes from

The story of Lonny

Alfonso is a Visigothic name that became the royal name of medieval Castile and León, worn by kings for five centuries. Spanish trimmed it to Alonso, and English-speaking America, meeting it in the Southwest and through Spanish literature, made Alonzo and then cut it to Lon. Adding -y or -ie to a short name is the oldest trick in English affection — it is how Tom becomes Tommy — and by the twentieth century Lonny and Lonnie were being given outright, with nothing longer behind them on the certificate. The name belongs unmistakably to mid-century America.

Meaningscholars disagree

noble and ready

If the parent name is Alonzo, the line runs back to the Spanish Alonso and Alfonso, and behind that to Germanic elements usually read as noble and ready or eager. If the name was built directly from the sound, as some of its generation were, it carries no meaning. Both accounts fit a name that appears in American records early and steadily.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It is warm without being juvenile, which is difficult for names ending in -y to manage.
  • Lon is available as a plainer adult form without any change of paperwork.
  • Nothing about the spelling is difficult, and nobody hesitates over the saying.
What to consider
  • Lonnie is the standard spelling and will be written far more often than this one.
  • It is anchored to a particular mid-century American generation, and that flavor comes with the name.
  • Nearly every child given this spelling is a boy, though the -y ending reads as unisex to many American ears.
