Where it comes from

Our story of Liston

The first man is Robert Liston, a Scottish surgeon of the years before anesthesia, when the whole art lay in speed — he could take off a leg in well under a minute, and spectators timed him. Speed was mercy then. He was also the surgeon who performed the first operation under ether in Europe, and he is said to have looked up afterward and remarked that this Yankee dodge beat mesmerism hollow; within a year the thing he was famous for had stopped mattering. The second is Sonny Liston, heavyweight champion, who had no birth certificate and never knew how old he was. The dates given for him vary by a decade. He fought, held the title, lost it in two strange nights, and died alone; a man whose own age was a matter of opinion.

Meaningnot established

Not established

The surname comes from a place, but which place is not settled — there are candidates in England, in Scotland and in Ireland, and the families who carried it to America did not record which one they came from. The ending is the ordinary English word for a farmstead, which gives the name a shape rather than a meaning.

Liston sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1919, with 26 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

Fashion outlook

Liston sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It has the settled, unforced sound of a real family name rather than a recent invention.
  • It is close enough to Preston and Weston to be familiar and far enough to be nobody else's.
  • Nothing in the spelling is ambiguous; it is read right the first time.
What to consider
  • It is one letter from the word listen, and children will find that immediately.
  • For a certain generation the name belongs entirely to a boxer.
  • There is no meaning to hand him, since the place the surname came from was never recorded.
