Where it comes from

The story of Lillia

The lily stood for purity in Christian art and belonged particularly to the Virgin and to the Annunciation, which is why so many European names were built on it — Lilia, Liliana, Lillian, Susanna by a different route entirely. The flower names became widely popular in English in the nineteenth century along with Rose, Violet and Daisy. Lillia is an older Latinate spelling and its American record sits mostly in that period, before Lily and Lillian took over.

Meaningscholars disagree

lily

Latin lilium names the flower, and Lillia and Lilia are built directly on it. Lillian is a different matter: it appears in medieval England as a pet form of Elizabeth, and the connection to the lily was made later by people who heard one. So the flower reading is certain for Lilia and inherited-by-assumption for the Lillian road, and this spelling sits between them.

Lillia sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2011, with 69 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Lillia went to 55 girls in 2025, but Lilia, Lilya and Liliya and the rest below are the same name said out loud. Together the 7 spellings went to 444, which makes it the 555th most-given girls’ name of the year — 2,443 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 3,620 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 29,223 for Lillia itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Lily, Lil and Lia are three ready short forms and all three are established names.
  • A concrete and well-documented meaning — an actual flower with real symbolic history.
  • Three syllables that read correctly in English, Italian and Spanish alike.
What to consider
  • Lilia, Lillia, Lilya and Liliya all circulate and none is dominant in English.
  • Lily is far more common and this name will be shortened to it constantly.
  • The doubled l is easily dropped in writing, since the sound gives no clue.
