Where it comes from

The story of Lige

Elijah confronts the prophets of Baal on Mount Carmel and is later taken up in a whirlwind; a cup is set for him at every Passover seder. Nineteenth-century American speech clipped the name hard — Elijah became Lige, as Elisha became Lish — and families registered the clipping outright. Lige peaked around 1885.

Meaning

my God is the Lord

Through Elijah, from the Hebrew Eliyahu — eli, 'my God', and Yahu, the divine name. The name is a complete statement and, in the Elijah narrative, a direct challenge to the prophets of Baal. The Hebrew is undisputed.

Lige sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1915, with 30 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

Fashion outlook

Lige sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Elijah stands behind it with one of the most dramatic narratives in the Hebrew Bible.
  • Elijah is available as a full formal version and is fully current.
  • One syllable, blunt, and unlike anything else in a classroom.
What to consider
  • The pronunciation is not obvious from the spelling and will be got wrong.
  • It reads as a nineteenth-century American clipping rather than a name.
  • It is strongly period-coded to the nineteenth century.
