Lexis
Feminine · “defender”
Lexis is overwhelmingly a girls’ name — 3,314 girls against 44 boys since 1880.
Lexis is a Greek word in its own right. It means speech, diction, the words a person uses — it is the root of lexicon and of lexical — and it happens to be exactly what is left when Alexis loses its first letter. Most names are clipped at the back; this one is clipped at the front, and what remains is a real word by accident.

The story of Lexis
Alexis was a men's name for most of its history — it still is in Greece and Russia — and crossed to women in the English-speaking world in the twentieth century, very sharply in the 1980s. Once it was widely given, the front-clipped form appeared, first as a nickname and then in birth records as a name in its own right. That is an unusual direction of travel: English almost always keeps the beginning of a name and drops the end, and Lexis does the opposite.
Meaningscholars disagree
defender, if it is read as Alexis; speech, if read as the Greek word
Alexis comes from the Greek alexein, to defend or ward off, and was a men's name in Greek and remains one in Russian. The Greek noun lexis, meaning a word or a manner of speaking, is a separate word from a separate root, and this name lands on it by coincidence rather than by descent.

Two syllables, stress on the first. It is said identically to Lexus, which is a car brand, and that collision is the main practical fact about the name in America.

The Deborrah test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Lexis's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Deborrah climbed just as high around 1953, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Deborrah's path sketches the road Lexis is walking now.
Lexis sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Lex and Lexi are both available and belong to different registers.
- It is a real Greek word as well as a clipped name, which is a genuinely unusual thing to be able to say.
- Five letters, two syllables, and readable on sight.
- It is recorded for boys as well as girls, which matches the older tradition of Alexis.
- It is said exactly like a widely sold car brand, and the association is unavoidable.
- Alexis is the standard name and will be assumed to be the full version.
- Lexis, Lexus and Lexi all appear in records, so the spelling has to be given.
