Where it comes from

The story of Deborrah

The Deborah of the Book of Judges holds an office the text gives to no other woman, and she holds it in her own right, sitting under a palm tree while people come to her for judgment. That is the ancient half. The American half has its own figure worth knowing: Deborah Sampson enlisted in the Continental Army under a man's name, served more than a year, was wounded, and afterward petitioned for and received a soldier's pension — one of very few women of the era to be paid as a veteran by the government she had fought for. She later toured New England lecturing about it, in uniform.

Meaning

A bee

The Hebrew word is devorah, a bee, and that reading is not disputed. What is worth adding is that the same three consonants spell the Hebrew root for speech — the root behind the word for word itself. Scholars differ on whether the bee is named from the speaking or the resemblance is a coincidence of a language with a small alphabet, but for a woman the biblical text presents as a prophet and a judge, the overlap has never stopped being noticed.

Fashion outlook

Deborrah sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The meaning is settled, concrete and pleasant, which parents value more than they expect to.
  • It is understood immediately in English, Spanish, Italian and Hebrew without translation.
  • The woman behind it is one of the few in the ancient record who holds authority without borrowing it from a husband.
What to consider
  • The doubled r is invisible in speech, so she will correct the spelling for life without ever being misheard.
  • The name is strongly associated with one stretch of American fashion, and it may read as a mother's name for a while yet.
  • Debbie comes attached whether or not anyone asks for it.
