Our story of Levina
Levina Teerlinc deserves a mention on any page carrying her name. Born in Bruges around 1510, trained by her father in the great Flemish manuscript-illumination tradition, she was recruited to the English court and paid more than Hans Holbein had been. She painted miniatures of Henry VIII, Edward VI, Mary I and Elizabeth I over thirty years, and she gave the queen a New Year's gift of a portrait almost every year of her reign. Very few women of the sixteenth century held a salaried professional position of that standing, and fewer still are documented as thoroughly. Attribution of surviving miniatures to her is contested, which is a common fate for court artists of the period, but the appointments, the payments and the gifts are all in the records. A name with an unresolved etymology can still have a very well-documented bearer.
Meaningnot established
Not established
Not established. Several routes are proposed and none demonstrated. It may be a Latinate feminine of Levin, itself from the Germanic Liafwin — from liof, 'dear, beloved', and wine, 'friend'. It may be a form of Lavinia, the Latin name from Virgil's Aeneid, whose own etymology is obscure. It may be a Dutch and Flemish formation of independent origin. The name is genuinely old and genuinely unexplained.
