Levie
Masculine · “joined”
Levie is given to both — 923 boys and 207 girls since 1880. See other names given to both
Levie is Levi with a final e, and that one letter does two things at once. In Dutch and in Jewish records from the Netherlands it is simply how the name was written — Levie is a documented spelling with its own history. To an American eye, though, a final e softens a name and pulls it toward the girls' side, which is why this spelling is one of the very few that the records show split almost evenly.

The story of Levie
Levi is the third son of Jacob and Leah and the ancestor of the tribe that served in the temple — which is why kohanim and levites are still distinguished in Jewish practice today. The name stayed in continuous Jewish use for three thousand years and entered general English use with the Protestant taste for Hebrew names. The e-spelling belongs particularly to the Netherlands, where Levie was a standard Dutch-Jewish form, and it reached American records with Dutch and German Jewish families in the nineteenth century. It has been rare here ever since, and unusually even-handed about which children carry it.
Meaning
joined, attached
Genesis gives the explanation as the name is given: Leah, having borne a third son, says that now her husband will be joined to her, and calls the boy Levi. The Hebrew verb behind it means to attach or accompany, and the name was later borne by the whole priestly tribe descended from him.

Pronouncing Levie
LEE-vee
Two syllables, stress on the first, exactly as Levi is said in American English. The Dutch original is closer to LAY-vee. The final e adds no syllable in either language, which surprises people who expect it to.

The trade-off
- It is a documented historical spelling rather than a modern respelling, which is rare among names with an added e.
- The name behind it is one of the oldest in continuous use anywhere in the world.
- The record shows it used almost equally for girls and boys, so it genuinely belongs to either child.
- Levi is available as an everyday form and needs no explanation.
- Nearly everyone will write Levi, and the final e will disappear from most documents.
- Because the split between girls and boys is close to even, no form or roster can guess correctly, and the child will correct assumptions in both directions.
- The name carries a clear Jewish association, which is a fact worth knowing rather than a drawback, and it will be recognized as such.
