Where it comes from

Our story of Levester

A document appeared claiming that the emperor Constantine, cured of leprosy by Pope Sylvester, had granted the papacy authority over Rome, Italy and the whole western empire. It was cited in disputes for centuries, argued over by emperors and popes, and used to justify a great deal — and in the fifteenth century a scholar examined its Latin, found words that did not exist when it was supposedly written, and demonstrated that it was an eighth-century forgery. The analysis is one of the founding pieces of modern textual criticism. The claim had by then been shaping European politics for seven hundred years, which the exposure did not undo.

Meaningnot established

Not established

The front is an American prefix with no meaning. The name behind the back half, Sylvester, is Latin and means of the woods. A clipped stem plus a prefix does not carry the stem's meaning in any straightforward way.

Fashion outlook

Levester sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It is read correctly on sight with nothing difficult in it.
  • The middle stress carries well.
  • It shortens to a name that appears in the record on its own.
What to consider
  • Levester, Lavester and Sylvester are all nearby and his will be heard as one of them.
  • The spelling is recorded for a few girls, but nearly every child with it is a boy.
  • The prefix carries no meaning.
