The story of Letta
The two habits produce very different results and both are consistent. English clips forward, which is why almost every English pet name is the first syllable of something: Ben, Kate, Tom, Sam. Italian clips backward, which is why so many Italian names look unrelated to their parents until you line them up — Sandro from Alessandro, Tonio from Antonio, Nando from Ferdinando, Rita from Margherita, Betta from Elisabetta. The back-clipped name then goes on to be given alone, which is how Rita and Nina became names in their own right. Letta belongs to that pattern, and the name it was cut from is no longer recoverable.

Not established
Letta has no source of its own. It is the tail of a longer name, most likely Violetta, Nicoletta or Letitia, and the meaning belongs to whichever of those a family had in mind. The -etta ending is the Italian diminutive and adds smallness or affection.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off
- Five letters and two syllables, with nothing that needs explaining.
- It is a real Italian formation rather than an American invention.
- It is genuinely rare, so a child will almost certainly never meet another.
- Most people will assume it is short for something and will ask what.
- Very few people carry it now and almost all of them are old.
- It is close to Letta, Etta and Lettie, all of which will be substituted.
