The story of Letizia
The Latin virtue names cluster in the catacomb inscriptions and the early martyr lists, and they are not decorative: a community under intermittent persecution naming children Hope, Faith and Gladness is making a statement about how it intends to go on. Felicitas, Spes, Fides, Caritas, Constantia and Laetitia all belong to that stock, and most of them acquired saints later, sometimes invented backwards from the name. Letizia went into Italian and stayed ordinary there. Its most famous bearer was Corsican: Napoleon's mother, who outlived him, was Letizia Ramolino, and she is the reason the name turns up in nineteenth-century records well outside Italy.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off
- A settled Latin meaning that is a plain, cheerful word.
- It belongs to a documented naming tradition rather than a fashion.
- Three short forms, two of which are full names in older English records.
- The zi is a ts in Italian and a sh to English readers, so two sayings compete.
- Leticia and Laetitia are both commoner in America and will be substituted.
- Four syllables is long, and it will be shortened by other people.
