Our story of Lenton
Every other European language calls the fast before Easter some version of the forty: quadragesima in Latin, carême in French, cuaresma in Spanish, quaresima in Italian. English calls it Lent, which is simply the Old English word for spring — lencten, related to the lengthening of the days, since spring is when daylight stretches. The church season took the name of the time of year it fell in, and when English adopted the word for the fast the ordinary sense of spring faded away, so that a word about daylight now means giving something up. The same happened nowhere else. A German or a Spaniard fasting for forty days is counting; an English speaker is, etymologically, just noticing that the evenings are drawing out.

Fashion outlook
Lenton sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- Len detaches cleanly and needs no explanation anywhere.
- Two syllables with front stress is the plainest shape English has.
- Six letters with no silent ones make it simple to spell aloud.
- Lenten, Linton and Leighton will all be written for it.
- The first syllable names a church season, which readers will notice.
- Nothing records which of the three origins applies.
Nobody names a baby alone.
