Where it comes from

Our story of Lemmie

The last chapter of Proverbs opens by saying that these are the words of King Lemuel, an oracle that his mother taught him — and then everything that follows is her speech. She warns him off drink and off spending himself on women, tells him to speak for those who cannot speak for themselves, and then delivers the long acrostic poem about the capable woman that gets read at weddings and printed on cards. It is worth noticing who is speaking. The passage that has been used for three thousand years to describe what a wife should be is a queen's advice to her son about what to look for and how to behave, and the voice throughout is a woman's. Nobody knows who Lemuel was; no such king appears anywhere else.

Meaningnot established

Not established

Lemuel is Hebrew and is usually read as belonging to God, though the derivation is not secure. The name may equally shorten a surname or be an independent build. Registered alone, it points back to none of them, and the record holds it for children of both sexes.

Pronouncing Lemmie

LEM-ee

Two syllables with the stress at the front. The doubled m keeps the first vowel short, which is what separates this from a reading with a long e.

Fashion outlook

Lemmie sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It works for a child of either sex, which the record confirms.
  • Six letters with no silent ones make it simple to spell aloud.
  • Two syllables with front stress is easy to say and quick.
What to consider
  • Lemmy, Lemuel and Jemmie will all be written for it.
  • It reads as a nickname, and people will ask what it stands for.
  • Which longer name it belongs to is not recorded.
