Where it comes from

The story of Lawton

Church Lawton and Buglawton in Cheshire are the best-known of the English Lawtons, and the hlaw in them is a real feature — Anglo-Saxons named settlements for the prehistoric mounds they found there and did not build. Families took the place name as a surname and carried it to America, where Lawton appears in nineteenth-century given-name records in respectable numbers before going quiet for most of the twentieth century.

Meaning

Lawton sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2017, with 45 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • A documented English place-name meaning with a real and rather old landscape behind it.
  • Plain letters and an obvious pronunciation for any English speaker.
  • Genuine nineteenth-century American use, so it is a revival rather than an invention.
What to consider
  • The Law clip is an ordinary English word and will be used for jokes.
  • Layton and Lawton are close enough to be written for one another.
  • It reads as a surname to people meeting it in front of another one.
