A lanier worked in wool. The word is Old French for a wool merchant or wool worker, from laine, and it became a surname the way most medieval occupational names did — by being what the neighbors called the family. The Laniers who carried it into English were Huguenot refugees, and what they did for a living once they arrived was music.

The story of Lanier
A family of French Protestant musicians named Lanier came to England in the sixteenth century and stayed for generations, serving four monarchs; one of them was Master of the King's Music and among the first people in England to write in the new Italian style. Another branch reached the American South, where the name became firmly established and eventually attached itself to lakes, schools and streets in Georgia. Its recent life as a first name follows the strongest current in American naming: Southern surnames moving to the front, and moving in particular onto daughters, which is why the record now shows it leaning toward girls without settling there.
Meaning

From Old French lanier, from laine, wool, from the Latin lana. It is an occupational surname of the plainest kind, and the trade it names was one of the great industries of medieval France and England.

The Langdon test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Lanier's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Langdon climbed just as high around 1911, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Langdon's path sketches the road Lanier is walking now.
Lanier sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- It is a real occupational surname with a documented trade behind it, not a coinage.
- Lane works as a short form for a child of either sex and needs no explanation.
- It is genuinely balanced between boys and girls in the record, which very few surname-names manage.
- Three syllables of soft consonants — it sits easily with most surnames.
- The two pronunciations are both current, and a child will be called by each.
- It is strongly associated with Georgia, where it names a lake and several schools, and that association travels with it.
- It is regularly misread as Lanie, Lanier's near-neighbor Lannier, or the French word it came from.
