Landyn
Masculine · Old English roots · “long hill”
Landyn is given to both — 11,887 boys and 1,569 girls since 1880. See Landyn as a girl nameSee other names given to both
Behind Landyn stands an old English hillside: place names built from *lang* and *dūn*, "long hill," that later became the surnames Langdon and Landon. The sound is unmistakably plain-spoken — two beats, stress up front, nothing to explain out loud. The y is the American touch, the same swap that turned Braden into Bradyn and Jaden into Jadyn.

The story of Landyn
The root is topography. Villages and estates in England were named for the shape of the land around them, and a long, low hill gave its name to settlements recorded as Langdon; families who came from such a place carried the name away as a surname, worn down over time to Landon. American parents have long drawn first names out of that surname pool, and Landon made the crossing comfortably. Landyn is the later step: the same name given the -yn ending that swept through American boys' names in the closing decades of the twentieth century, replacing the final syllable of dozens of names at once.
Meaning
long hill
Landyn is a respelled Landon, and it inherits Landon's derivation: an English surname taken from places named with Old English *lang* (long) and *dūn* (hill). The spelling change carries no separate meaning of its own.

The Buck test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Landyn's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Buck climbed just as high around 1910, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Buck's path sketches the road Landyn is walking now.
Landyn sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Pronunciation is obvious from the page and never needs correcting, even when the spelling does.
- Sits in a well-established American tradition of surnames used as first names, so it reads as a name immediately.
- Comes with a familiar twin spelling, Landon, which means the sound is widely recognized already.
- Short, two syllables, stress in front — pairs easily with both short and long middle names.
- Common enough to be known, sparse enough that a classroom duplicate is unlikely.
- The default spelling in most people's minds is Landon. Expect forms, coffee cups and school rosters to come back with the o, and a lifelong habit of spelling it out.
- The -yn ending places the name in a specific and recent American fashion for respellings. It reads as of its moment in a way the plainer Landon does not, and that moment has already crested.
- On paper, -yn endings also belong to names like Evelyn and Jocelyn, so a stranger reading it cold may hesitate — though spoken aloud it lands squarely where US records put it, with boys.
