The story of Landree
Saint Landry was a seventh-century bishop of Paris who is said to have sold church plate to feed the poor during a famine, and the name became a French one through him. Acadian families carried the surname to Nova Scotia and then, after the expulsion of 1755, to Louisiana, where Landry is among the commonest Cajun surnames and gives its name to a parish. Tom Landry, who coached the Dallas Cowboys for twenty-nine years, made it nationally familiar. Its use as a girls' given name is very recent, belonging to the surname-name movement, and Landree, Landri and Landrie all appear in the 2010s with Landree peaking in 2018.
Meaning
Ruler of the land
From the Germanic Landric, from land and rīk, ruler or power — the same rīk as in Frederick and Roderick. Old French made it Landri, and the surname Landry comes from it. The reading is settled. The -ee ending of Landree is an American spelling convention marking the final vowel and carries no meaning.
