Lanaya
Feminine
Lana was invented by a film studio. A teenager signed in the late 1930s was told her own name would not do, and the publicity department supplied a shorter one. It went onto posters, and then, within a few years, onto birth certificates all over the country.

The story of Lanaya
The Hollywood studio system renamed people as a matter of routine, and some of the names it made up were good enough to spread. Lana is one of them; so are several other one-word screen names of the same decades. What is unusual about the studio names is that they were built to be easy — short, open, unambiguous on a marquee — which is exactly what makes a name spread once ordinary parents get hold of it. Lana did spread, and then extended: Lanaya, Lanae, Lanika and Lanessa are all built on it. Whether the woman on the poster was named for the Latin word or for nothing at all is not recorded, and probably nobody in the office asked.
Meaningnot established
Not established
Lanaya is a modern extension of Lana and has no settled meaning. Lana itself is several things at once: a Latin word for wool, which gives lanolin and flannel; a Russian short form of Svetlana; a Hawaiian word for calm or afloat; and a studio invention with no source at all. The -aya ending is American and adds nothing.

The Marysol test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Lanaya's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Marysol climbed just as high around 1970, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Marysol's path sketches the road Lanaya is walking now.
Lanaya sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Three open syllables and nothing in it that any English speaker will stumble over.
- Lana and Naya both work as short forms and both stand alone.
- It is uncommon while sounding entirely familiar.
- There is no documented meaning, and the name it extends may have been made up in an office.
- Two pronunciations are in real use and the spelling settles neither.
- Lanaya, Lanaia and Lanaeya all exist, so it will be spelled out often.
