Lafe
Masculine · “the beech wood”
Lafe is the front of Lafayette and nothing else, and for a stretch of American history that was enough. The Marquis de Lafayette came back to the United States as an old man and toured all twenty-four states to enormous crowds, and the country responded by putting his name on counties, streets, colleges and sons. Lafe is what those sons were called at home.

The story of Lafe
Lafayette fought in the Continental Army as a very young man, went home to the French Revolution, and returned to America decades later at the invitation of Congress. The tour that followed was one of the great public events of the early republic, and the naming that came out of it was on a scale that is hard to imagine now — towns, squares, streets and a generation of boys. Lafe is the clipped form those boys used, and it appears in American records as a name in its own right, most often in the upland South and the Midwest, long after anyone remembered what it was short for.
Meaning
the beech wood
Lafayette is a French place name before it is anything else — la fayette, from the Old French word for a beech tree, so a beech grove or a place among beeches. The name honors a man rather than describing a child, which is the usual case with names taken from a public figure.

LAYF
One syllable, rhyming with safe. The e is silent, which trips readers who expect a French name to keep a final vowel. It is not French here — it is American, and it is said the plainest possible way.

The trade-off
- One syllable, four letters, and nothing to shorten or explain phonetically.
- It has a real historical anchor, and the man behind it is one of the few figures both France and America claim warmly.
- It is old enough in American records to be traditional rather than invented.
- It reads as a nickname to most people, and a man will be asked what it is short for.
- It belongs strongly to an older rural America, and that flavor comes with it.
- The connection to Lafayette is invisible unless someone explains it, and most people no longer make it.
