Our story of Kyre
A five-letter name with an ambiguous ending is a rarer thing than it sounds, and Kyre shows why. English gives a final -re two quite different treatments: in French borrowings it is a syllable, as in genre and macabre; in native words it is silent or reduced, as in acre and ochre. So Kyre can reasonably be read KY-ree, KIRE or KY-ray, and the spelling does not choose. Most successful American coinages avoid this — the whole business of respelling is usually about closing ambiguities, not opening them. Kyre's 1998 peak is small, and the ambiguity is probably part of why: a name that cannot be read aloud on sight has a ceiling.
Meaningnot established
Not established
No source establishes an etymology. The Ky- opening is an American naming element drawn from Kyle and Kyra; the -re ending is not a standard American suffix and appears in few other names. Greek kyrios, a lord, and the liturgical Kyrie are sometimes offered and are not documented as the source. Kyre is not recorded outside American use.

- counting every spelling
The SSA counts spellings, not names. Kyre went to 16 boys in 2025, but Kyree, Khyree and Khiree and the rest below are the same name said out loud. Together the 8 spellings went to 453, which makes it the 530th most-given boys’ name of the year — 5,078 places above the chart.
About 1 boy in 3,771 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 106,755 for Kyre itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Benn test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Kyre's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Benn climbed just as high around 1942, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Benn's path sketches the road Kyre is walking now.
Kyre sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
