Krystyn
Feminine · “follower of Christ”
Krystyn puts two y's into a name that has none in any of its source languages, and neither of them changes a sound. The saint whose popularity carried the name across Europe is, on the evidence, probably more than one woman.

The story of Krystyn
A saint's legend is not a biography, and the one behind this name is a case study in what happens when several local cults collide. There is a martyr venerated at an Italian lake town and another at Tyre on the Levantine coast, and the surviving accounts of the two are so similar — the same tortures in the same order, the same refusals — that historians long ago concluded one has been copied onto the other, or that both descend from a third story nobody has. A separate medieval figure with the same name, a woman in the Low Countries said to have revived at her own funeral and behaved extraordinarily afterwards, has sometimes been folded in as well. Hagiography worked this way routinely: a name attached to a place attracted a narrative, and the narrative traveled. What the name's popularity actually records is the spread of the cult, not the life of any one woman.
Meaning
follower of Christ
From the Latin Christiana, a feminine form of the adjective. The Greek word behind it means anointed and is a translation of the Hebrew title messiah, so the name is several translations deep before it becomes a name at all. The y spellings borrow their look from an unrelated English word.

Fashion outlook
Krystyn sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- The name behind it is understood everywhere in Europe and the Americas.
- Krys and Tina are both available and sound nothing like each other.
- The spelling is distinctive while the sound is entirely ordinary.
- Kristin, Kristen and Christine are all far commoner and will be written for it.
- Both y's are silent changes, so the spelling has to be given aloud every time.
- The y look is borrowed from an unrelated English word, and readers will make that connection.
