From christos to Kristi
The story of Kristi
Christina was a medieval devotional name that northern Europe kept with a K, and American families borrowed the K forms heavily from the 1960s. What happened next is the interesting part: rather than settling on one short form, the country used six at once — Christy, Christie, Christi, Kristy, Kristie and Kristi — with no single spelling ever taking more than a third of the total. Kristi peaked at the end of the 1970s.
Meaning
a Christian, a follower of Christ
Through Kristin or Christina, from the Latin Christiana, feminine of Christianus. The Greek christos, 'anointed', is the root, and it entered Greek as the translation of the Hebrew title messiah.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Kristi went to 14 girls in 2025, but Christy, Kristy and Cristy and the rest below are the same name said out loud. Together the 5 spellings went to 93, which makes it the 867th most-given girls’ name of the year — 6,624 places above the chart.
About 1 girl in 17,282 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 114,805 for Kristi itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Lola test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Kristi's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Lola climbed just as high around 1904, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Lola's path sketches the road Kristi is walking now.
Kristi sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Kristin and Christina are both available as formal versions with long documented use.
- It is the tidiest of the spellings — five letters, nothing silent.
- Estonian uses exactly this form, which gives it a real life outside American records.
- Six spellings were in circulation at once, so it is misspelled almost every time.
- The -i ending dates the name closely to the 1970s and 1980s.
