The story of Kristeen
The Latin word behind the name went two ways. One produced Christina, Christine, Kirsten and Kristin, and it became so ordinary in Scandinavia that the K spelling is the older tradition rather than the modern respelling it looks like. The other went into the Alpine valleys. There, people disabled from birth by severe iodine deficiency were called cretins, and cretin is crestin is chretien is Christian: calling them Christians was a way of insisting they were human souls and not animals. Medicine borrowed the word, stripped the argument out of it, and left the slur it is now. The name kept the dignity and the word lost it. In the twentieth century Christine Jorgensen, whose transition was front-page news across America, chose her name in honor of the Danish doctor, Christian Hamburger, who had treated her.
Meaning
A Christian
Christina and Christine are feminine forms of Latin christianus, a follower of Christ. Christos is itself Greek for anointed, a translation of the Hebrew title rather than a name. So the name is a statement of allegiance rather than a description of a person, which is why it spread wherever conversion went and why it exists in every European language in a slightly different shape.

Pronouncing Kristeen
kris-TEEN
Two syllables with the stress at the back, which is unusual for an English woman's name and gives it a slightly formal ring. Kristina and Kristine, which look close on paper, are stressed differently and sound like other names.

Fashion outlook
Kristeen sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- The sound is universally recognized in English, so the name never needs explaining, only spelling.
- It has close forms in German, French, Spanish and all of Scandinavia, which makes it easy to carry abroad.
- Four unrelated short forms, Kris, Kristy, Teenie and Tina, cover four quite different registers.
- Christine is the standard spelling and will be assumed; this version has to be spelled out every time it is written down.
- The K and the double e together look like a deliberate respelling, which places the name in a particular American decade.
- It sits inside a very large family of near-identical names, so a Kristeen will answer to Kristen, Kristin and Christina by mistake for years.
