Courtney has two possible origins and one of them is a nose. Courtenay is a place in northern France and the family who came from it carried the name to England; but medieval French also produced court nez, short nose, as a nickname, and a real Norman lord was called that. Kortney replaces the C and the ou in one move.

Where it comes from

The story of Kortney

Nickname surnames of this kind were blunt and widespread — a Norman duke was called Curthose for having short legs — so the short-nose reading is not implausible on grounds of politeness. The Courtenays were a substantial Anglo-French family either way. Courtney became an American girl's name in the later twentieth century, and the K and the o in this spelling do two substitutions at once, replacing the French C with a K and the French ou with a plain o, which removes every visible trace of the origin.

Meaningscholars disagree

from Courtenay; or short-nose

The Courtenay family took their name from a place in the Loiret, and the place name is generally read as a Roman estate name plus a Gallo-Roman suffix. The alternative is a nickname: court nez, short of nose, which is recorded as a byname and would be entirely in keeping with medieval naming, where Longshanks and Curthose were royal descriptions. Both readings are defended and neither has won.

Fashion outlook

Kortney sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It has a documented Anglo-French family behind it and a genuinely funny alternative etymology.
  • Two syllables, entirely unambiguous once seen.
  • It works for either child, as surname-derived names generally do.
What to consider
  • Courtney is the standard spelling and this will be corrected toward it on essentially every document.
  • Two silent substitutions mean the name is dictated letter by letter every time.
  • It is closely tied to one American generation and dates a person fairly precisely.
