Koreen may respell a French name or join a free front to the ending American naming used heavily in the middle of the last century, and nothing records which. The Greek city behind the French name solved a geographical problem in a way that sounds impossible and was not.

Where it comes from

Our story of Koreen

For something like seven hundred years, ships were dragged across the Isthmus of Corinth on a paved road. The Diolkos was a limestone trackway with grooves cut for wheeled cradles, running the few miles between the gulfs, and it let vessels avoid the long and dangerous voyage round the Peloponnese. Sections of it survive and have been excavated. Warships certainly used it, and the question of how large a merchant ship could be portaged this way is still argued. Attempts to dig an actual canal were made by a tyrant of Corinth, by Julius Caesar, by Caligula and by Nero, who began one with Jewish prisoners and abandoned it; the modern canal was not finished until the nineteenth century, on close to the line Nero had marked.

The French name it may respell is built on the Greek for a girl and is also the name of a poet. The -een ending is a free American element. Nothing in the record separates the two readings.

Koreen sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1969, with 28 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Koreen sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Back stress gives a two-syllable name a firm landing.
  • Both halves detach as short forms and neither sounds like the other.
  • Six letters with no silent ones make it quick to write.
What to consider
  • Corinne, Corene and Korene will all be written for it.
  • The k marks it as a respelling, which readers notice at once.
  • Nothing records which of the two readings applies.
