Kinley
Feminine
Kinley is overwhelmingly a girls’ name — 19,959 girls against 354 boys since 1880.
Kinley began as a surname out of Gaelic-speaking Scotland and Ulster — the Mac shorn off McKinley — and reached American children only recently, riding in alongside Finley and Kinsley. Two clean syllables, both of them obvious on the page, and a root that goes back to one of the oldest personal names in the Highlands.

The story of Kinley
The name behind Kinley is Fionnlagh, borne by men in the Scottish Highlands long before surnames were fixed, and surviving today as Finlay and Finley. From it came Mac Fhionnlaigh, anglicized as McKinley — a name carried to America by Scots and Ulster Scots emigrants, and familiar in the United States ever since as a presidential surname. Dropping the Mac left plain Kinley, a documented surname variant in its own right. Its life as a girl's first name is an American development and a recent one, part of the same wave that turned Finley, Kinsley and Harley into names for daughters.

Traced through McKinley: "fair hero" or "fair-haired warrior"
Kinley is a reduced form of the surname McKinley, Gaelic Mac Fhionnlaigh, "son of Fionnlagh." Fionnlagh combines fionn, "white, fair," with a second element read two ways: laoch, "warrior, hero," or laogh, "calf." Scholars have argued both. The first reading is the one usually printed; the second has real support.

The Sonja test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Kinley's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Sonja climbed just as high around 1938, and its whole arc is on record. The trade-off
- Spelled the way it sounds, and readable at first glance by anyone who knows McKinley or Finley.
- Short, two beats, easy for a small child to say and write.
- Traceable back to Fionnlagh, one of the long-standing personal names of Gaelic Scotland.
- Sits in a recognized family of surname-names, so it needs no explaining even where it is not common.
- Familiar in sound without being frequently encountered — few classmates will share it.
- It will be heard as Kinsley or Kenley, and read back as Kinlee or Kynlee. Expect to spell and correct it fairly often, in both directions.
- The name's wave is very recent, so nearly everyone who carries it is still young. It reads clearly as a name of this era rather than a name of every era, and it is now easing back from its high point.
- Kinley is also a Coca-Cola bottled water and tonic brand sold widely in India and parts of Europe — worth knowing if your family travels or lives abroad.
- US records treat it as a girl's name, while its Gaelic root and the surname McKinley belong to men. That history is a nice thing to be able to explain, not a problem.
