Kimara
Feminine
Call me not Naomi, call me Mara, for the Almighty has dealt bitterly with me. That is Ruth 1:20, and it is one of very few places in the Bible where a woman renames herself. Mara is Hebrew for bitter, and Naomi, meaning pleasant, discards her own name after losing her husband and both sons.

Our story of Kimara
Our reading is that Kimara is a coinage that happens to contain one of the more powerful short words in the Hebrew Bible, and the coincidence is worth stating alongside the disclaimer. Naomi's renaming is unusual in scripture: names are normally given by parents or by God, and here a woman announces her own, as a description of what has happened to her. The narrative then declines to use it. Everyone in the book goes on calling her Naomi, and by the end the neighbors are congratulating her on a grandson. So the renaming is a moment of grief that the story does not honor, which may be the point. None of that is in Kimara, which was assembled from a 1960s stem and a 1970s ending. But a family that meets the word will meet the verse, and it is better to know where it comes from than to be told a fabricated meaning.

Kimara is an American formation joining the Kim stem, from Kimberly, to an -ara ending shared with Tamara and Kiara. It contains the sequence mara by accident rather than by descent; the Hebrew mara, bitter, is a separate word and is not the source. Kimberly is from a South African diamond town named for a British colonial secretary. Kimara peaks in 1974.

The Wana test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Kimara's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Wana climbed just as high around 1927, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Wana's path sketches the road Kimara is walking now.
Kimara sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
