Kiley is an Irish surname that America turned into a girls' first name, and it ends the way an enormous number of English words end: with a y standing in for a sound that ought to be written with an i. That habit is older than printing, and it comes from a problem with handwriting rather than a decision about names.

The story of Kiley
Richard Kiley was the first man to sing The Impossible Dream. He created Don Quixote in Man of La Mancha on Broadway in 1965 and won a Tony for it, having already won one years earlier, and he turned down the film so that Peter O'Toole could be dubbed by somebody else. He spent the rest of a long career as one of those actors whose face everyone knew and whose name nobody could produce on demand — which the makers of Jurassic Park turned into a joke, hiring him to narrate the park's tour recording and then having a character say, delightedly, that they had spared no expense: that is Richard Kiley.
Meaningscholars disagree
graceful, or comely
The surname is anglicized from an Irish original built on a word meaning graceful or handsome, though several distinct Irish families were flattened into the same English spelling and the trail back is not clean for most of them. The written ending is the more interesting half. In medieval hands, i, m, n, u and v were all made of the same short vertical stroke, and a string of them was genuinely hard to read — so scribes wrote y at the end of a word, where its tail dropped below the line and could not be lost. English never went back. It is why the sound at the end of Kiley, Molly, Emily and happy is written with a y and almost never with an i.

Fashion outlook
Kiley sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- It is easy to say at first sight and short enough to survive any amount of shouting across a playground.
- It carries a real Irish surname behind it rather than being assembled from sounds.
- It suits a child and an adult equally, which surname-names often manage better than traditional first names.
- Kylie, Kiely, Kyleigh and Kayley are all in circulation and she will be written as all of them.
- The name is closely tied to one decade in America, which will date her to anyone who knows the record.
- The Irish original is unrecoverable for most families, so the meaning comes with a shrug attached.
