The story of Kieren
Two Irish saints called Ciarán are among the twelve apostles of Ireland: Ciarán of Saighir, one of the earliest, and Ciarán of Clonmacnoise, who founded the monastery on the Shannon that became one of the great centers of Irish learning and died at thirty-three. The name has been in continuous Irish use. Its spread into English-speaking countries came in the twentieth century, thickest in Britain, Ireland and Australia, and the Kieren spelling is particularly Australian; its small American peak in 2003 sits at the tail of the general Irish-name revival.
Meaning
Little dark one
From Irish Ciarán, a diminutive of ciar, dark or black, describing hair or complexion. The reading is settled. The English spellings Kieran, Kieren, Ciaran and Keiran all render the same name; the initial c is hard in Irish, which is why the k spellings exist at all.

The Karin test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Kieren's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Karin climbed just as high around 1968, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Karin's path sketches the road Kieren is walking now.
Kieren sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
