Kerwin
Masculine · “little dark one”
Kerwin comes out of Ireland, and the road it took bent the spelling badly. The Irish original has a bh in the middle, which Irish says as a v or a w, and English has no way of writing that except by choosing one and moving on. What arrives on this side is a tidy two-syllable name with no visible trace of the Gaelic it started as.

The story of Kerwin
The surname belongs to Galway. The Kirwans were one of the fourteen merchant families known as the Tribes of Galway, who ran the city's trade for centuries and were unusual in being of Gaelic rather than Norman stock — the other thirteen were mostly Anglo-Norman. Emigration carried the name to America, where it followed the standard path from surname to first name in the twentieth century. The Kerwin spelling is the English-language settlement of a sound that Irish writes with letters English does not use that way, and it is one of several: Kirwan, Kerwin, Kirwin and Kerwan are all the same family name.
Meaning
little dark one
From the Irish ciar, dark or black — usually said of hair — with the diminutive endings that Irish stacks up freely. The same element opens Ciarán and Ciara, so the family resemblance across those names is real rather than coincidental.

Pronouncing Kerwin
KUR-win
Two syllables, stress on the first, entirely straightforward for an English reader. The Irish original is said quite differently — the bh is a v and the ending carries more weight — but nobody in America attempts that.

The Deane test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Kerwin's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Deane climbed just as high around 1934, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Deane's path sketches the road Kerwin is walking now.
Kerwin sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- It is an authentic Irish surname with a documented history in one identifiable city.
- The spelling is transparent to an English reader, which most Irish names are not.
- Two syllables, six letters, and nothing anyone stumbles over.
- It is easily confused with Kervin, Kelvin, Mervyn and Corwin, all of which are separate names.
- The Irish original is unrecognizable in the English spelling, so the heritage is invisible without explanation.
- It belongs to a mid-century sound in American ears and may read as dated to some.
