Kerriann welds an Irish county name to a Hebrew one, and it keeps the county in its nickname spelling rather than its own. Off the coast of that county is a rock with a monastery on it that is hard to believe even standing on it.

Where it comes from

The story of Kerriann

Eight miles out into the Atlantic from the Kerry coast a pinnacle of rock rises seven hundred feet out of very rough water, and on a shelf near the top there are six beehive huts, two oratories and a graveyard, built dry without mortar and standing after more than a thousand years. Monks lived there from somewhere around the sixth or seventh century until the thirteenth, a community of perhaps a dozen at a time, reaching the huts by three flights of stone steps cut into the cliff. What they ate came from fishing, seabirds and a garden the size of a room. Vikings raided it, which means it was worth raiding. The community eventually moved to the mainland, and the site was left alone so completely that the buildings survive nearly intact — which is why the place is now a World Heritage site with a strict cap on how many people may land in a day.

from the county of Ciar's people, joined to Anne

The county's Irish name means the people of Ciar, and Ciar itself is generally read as a word for dark or black, though that is a proposal rather than a settled fact. The second half is Hebrew and means favor or grace, and that much is not in doubt.

Kerriann sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1987, with 35 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Kerriann sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Both halves are familiar, so the compound is understood at once.
  • It shortens cleanly to either half and both are complete names.
  • Front stress with a light ending is a comfortable English rhythm.
What to consider
  • Kerryann, Kerri-Ann and Keriann are all recorded and the spelling will be corrected often.
  • Written solid, some systems will split it back into two fields.
  • The county name's own meaning is a proposal rather than a settled fact.
