Kensie is an unusual kind of clipping: it takes the middle of a name rather than the front or the back. Mackenzie gives Mac at the front and Zie at the back, and Kensie comes from neither — it is the interior of the word, lifted out. That is rare, and it is why the name looks unfamiliar despite its parent being enormously common. Its peak is 2012.

How old is the name Kensie?

Kensie first appears in US birth records in 1978 — 47 years ago. The typical Kensie is a kid of about 12 — this name's wave is very recent. About 1,000 people named Kensie are estimated to be alive in the US today.

Where it comes from

The story of Kensie

Mackenzie was a Highland clan name and stayed a surname for centuries. Its conversion to an American girls' name is recent and steep: it appears in the top thousand from 1978, reaches the top hundred by 1994 and the top forty by 2000. The z in the modern spelling is itself a historical accident — the Gaelic name was written with a letter that Scottish scribes wrote like a z and pronounced like a y, so Mackenzie was originally said MacKENNY. The modern pronunciation reads the letter as a z. Kensie belongs to the wave of clippings and respellings that followed the name's rise.

Meaning

son of Coinneach — 'the fair one'

Scottish Gaelic MacCoinnich means the son of Coinneach, a personal name from a root meaning fair, comely or handsome; Coinneach also gives the English name Kenneth. So Mackenzie is a patronymic and its meaning belongs to the personal name inside it. Kensie inherits that by descent. The clan Mackenzie of Kintail were a major Highland family and the surname is common throughout Scotland.
