Kennie
Masculine · “Handsome”
Kennie is given to both — 1,308 boys and 327 girls since 1880. See other names given to both
Kennie is a pet form that has outlived the names it was cut from, and it is recorded for boys and for girls alike. That is not an accident of this particular name. Pet forms do not carry sex the way full names do, because the part they keep is the part that was never doing that job.

The story of Kennie
The saint inside the older of these names is Cainnech, an Irish abbot of the sixth century who worked in Ireland and in Scotland and who left his name on a good deal of the map. The Irish city of Kilkenny is Cill Chainnigh, the church of Cainnech, so a whole city carries his name in the possessive; the Scottish form of the same name is Coinneach, which English wrote down as Kenneth. Whether a particular American Kennie descends from that name, or from Kendra, or from a surname, or from nothing more than the sound of a grandfather's name, is not something a birth record preserves. What the record does show is a short, friendly form used for children of both sexes across several generations.

Handsome, or born of fire
It depends which full name is behind it, and often nobody knows. Kenneth anglicizes two separate Gaelic names, one of which is generally read as handsome or fair and the other as born of fire; Kendra, Kenna and Kenya are unrelated to those and to each other. A pet form drops exactly the material that would let you tell, which is why the meaning cannot be given without first asking the family a question the records do not answer.

Pronouncing Kennie
KEN-ee
Two syllables with the stress at the front and a short e. The -ie and -y spellings are said identically; the choice between them is visual, and in American records the -ie spelling was more often given to daughters.

Fashion outlook
Kennie sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- Short, warm and impossible to mispronounce, with nothing in it a young child cannot manage.
- It works for a child of either sex without looking like a statement about that.
- Ken is waiting inside it as a plain, adult, one-syllable name.
- The spelling with a y is much more common, so this one will be corrected on paperwork for life.
- A pet form used as a full name gives a child no formal version to grow into.
- Because the full name behind it cannot be recovered, questions about what it means have no short answer.
