Where it comes from

The story of Kenney

Cinaed was the name of the king traditionally counted as the first of a united Scotland; Coinneach was the name of an early Irish saint and remains an ordinary Gaelic name today. English clerks rendered both as Kenneth, and by the time anyone noticed, the merger was permanent. The surname Kenney comes from an Irish family name that is a third thing again. The ey ending marks it as a surname; the y ending marks a first name; and the record gives this spelling almost entirely to boys.

born of fire, or handsome

The two Gaelic originals have different meanings and English merged them. Which one lies behind a particular family is not recoverable, and both readings are given in reference books without distinguishing.

Kenney sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1959, with 78 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Kenney sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It is said correctly by everyone on first hearing.
  • It works as a surname and as a first name, which suits families that use both.
  • Ken is a ready short form and a standing name of its own.
What to consider
  • Kenny is the commoner spelling as a given name and will be written instead.
  • The spelling is recorded for girls as well as boys in the United States.
  • The meaning is genuinely double, because two Gaelic names were merged.
