Where it comes from

The story of Kennan

The O Cianain were a Fermanagh family who served as hereditary historians to the Maguires, and one of them compiled a fourteenth-century chronicle that still survives, which is a fitting occupation for a family whose name means the ancient one. The surname anglicized in several directions, Keenan being the commonest and Kennan a less usual variant. Its use as an American given name follows the general nineteenth and twentieth century pattern of Irish surnames turned first names, and its best year on record is 1959. The American diplomat and historian George F. Kennan, who shaped United States policy toward the Soviet Union, is the best-known bearer of the surname.

Meaning

little ancient one, from a word meaning long or distant

From Irish Cianan, a diminutive of Cian, which means long, enduring, far or ancient. The surname O Cianain, anglicized as Keenan and Kennan, means descendant of Cianan. The reading of cian is well attested; it is the same element in the Irish phrase for long ago and in the name of the mythological Cian, father of Lugh.

Kennan sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2004, with 41 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Kennan went to 13 boys in 2025, but Kenan and Keenan are the same name said out loud. Together the 3 spellings went to 346, which makes it the 605th most-given boys’ name of the year — 5,841 places above the chart.

About 1 boy in 4,937 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 131,390 for Kennan itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • A settled Irish meaning and a documented hereditary historian family behind it.
  • Ken and Kenny are both completely established everyday forms.
  • Rare in this spelling while being entirely familiar in sound.
What to consider
  • Keenan is the standard spelling and gives a different vowel.
  • Kennan, Kennon and Kenan all circulate and get confused.
  • It is often assumed to shorten Kenneth, which is an unrelated name.
