Kenji
Masculine
Kenji is overwhelmingly a boys’ name — 5,624 boys against 33 girls since 1880.
Kenji has been turning up in American birth records for more than a century, arriving with Japanese families who settled in Hawaii and along the Pacific coast — and California is still one of its strongest states. It is built from two short beats, KEN-jee, that land the same way in Japanese and in English, which is part of why it has never needed adapting to travel.

The story of Kenji
Kenji is Japanese, and it follows a pattern that shaped generations of boys' names there: a first element carrying a quality, and a second element that often recorded birth order — the -ichi, -ji and -zō endings that gave Japanese families Kenichi, Shinji, Junji and Kenji alike. That naming habit was at its height through the Meiji era and well into the twentieth century. The name reached American records in the early 1900s alongside Japanese migration to Hawaii and the West Coast, and it has appeared in them, without a real gap, ever since. Its geography today still traces that history, with California leading.
Meaningscholars disagree
depends on the characters: most often "strong/healthy" or "wise" plus "second son" or "to govern"
In Japanese the sound is one thing and the writing is another. Ken can be written 健 (healthy, strong), 賢 (wise), 研 (to sharpen, to study) or 憲 (law). The -ji is usually 二 (two, marking a second son), 治 (to govern, to heal) or 司 (to administer). So 健二 reads roughly "strong second son" and 賢治 "wise and governing" — both are common, real spellings, and neither is more correct than the other.
Pronouncing Kenji
KEN-jee
Two even beats: KEN as in "pen", then jee. In Japanese the syllables carry nearly equal weight, so it sounds flatter than the stressed English version, but KEN-jee is what English speakers say and it reads correctly on sight. The occasional error is a long second syllable, ken-JYE.

The Darwyn test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Kenji's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Darwyn climbed just as high around 1935, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Darwyn's path sketches the road Kenji is walking now.
Kenji sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Spelled the way it sounds in English — five letters, one obvious pronunciation, no silent anything.
- A record in American births stretching back over a century, steady rather than fashion-driven.
- Comes with a ready-made short form, Ken, that has stood alone as a name for generations.
- Works unchanged in both Japanese and English, with no respelling needed when it crosses between them.
- The meaning lives in the kanji, not the sound. If a specific meaning matters to you, that means choosing characters — a real and pleasant decision for a Japanese-speaking family, and one that simply isn't available if the name is written only in the Latin alphabet.
- English speakers reach for Ken and Kenny quickly. If you would rather the full name be used, expect to say so more than once.
- A child named Kenji will most likely be the only one in the school. That means no last-initial problem, and also a name that gets asked about — including by people who assume it is short for something longer.
