Where it comes from

Our story of Darwyn

Darwin had the outline of natural selection by his early thirties, wrote it up as a private essay, told almost nobody, and spent the next twenty years on barnacles, pigeons and orchids while the manuscript sat in a drawer. Then Alfred Russel Wallace, working in the Malay Archipelago and ill with fever, wrote out the same idea in a few days and posted it to Darwin asking for an opinion. Darwin's friends arranged for both to be read to a learned society on the same evening, and Darwin then wrote his book in thirteen months. Wallace, who had every reason to be bitter, spent the rest of his life insisting the credit was Darwin's.

Fashion outlook

Darwyn sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It is read correctly at first sight and rarely needs spelling twice.
  • Dar and Win are both available as short forms and both work on their own.
  • It carries a documented scientific history a child can go and read about.
What to consider
  • The surname is attached to one of the more contested subjects in American public life.
  • Darwin is the standard spelling and this one will be corrected to it regularly.
  • No reason for the respelling is documented, so there is nothing to say when someone asks.
