Rowdy
Masculine · “boisterous”
Rowdy is overwhelmingly a boys’ name — 4,980 boys against 75 girls since 1880.
Rowdy is one of the small number of American English words that walked straight off the page and became a name. It arrived in the vocabulary of frontier and riverboat talk in the early nineteenth century, and reached American living rooms as Rowdy Yates, the young trail hand Clint Eastwood played on the Western series Rawhide at the turn of the 1960s. It has been climbing steadily ever since, still concentrated in Texas and Oklahoma, where the cattle-drive sound of it has never gone out of style.

The story of Rowdy
"Rowdy" first appears in early nineteenth-century American English as a noun for a rough, brawling man — frontier and river-trade slang before it settled into the adjective everyone knows. Its jump to a given name is a twentieth-century American story, and a Western one: Rawhide put Rowdy Yates on screen at the end of the 1950s, and the name entered the birth records in that same stretch of years. It has stayed close to that world since, strongest in Texas and Oklahoma, where it also lives on as a barn name for horses and a nickname for boys with a spare word for a middle name. Unlike most names in this book, it has no Hebrew, Greek or Germanic root behind it — the whole line is American.
Meaning
boisterous, rough-and-tumble — the English word
The name is the plain English adjective, so its sense is not in doubt. Where the word itself came from is less certain: it is usually tied to "row" in the sense of a noisy quarrel, and "row" has no traced ancestor of its own.
Pronouncing Rowdy
ROW-dee
First syllable rhymes with "loud", not with "low". Because it is an everyday English word, almost no American reader will hesitate over it.

The Linden test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Rowdy's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Linden climbed just as high around 1947, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Linden's path sketches the road Rowdy is walking now.

The trade-off
- Spelled and said exactly as the dictionary word, so it survives phone calls, forms and roll call without correction.
- Two short syllables with a hard stop at the front — carries well when shouted across a yard or a field.
- Rare enough in the record that a child is unlikely to share it with a classmate, while still being a word every English speaker already knows.
- A clear, unbroken American history: frontier slang, then a Western hero, then a name — no guesswork in the line.
- It is a live English word for disorderly behavior, and that meaning will be read back to the child by teachers, coaches and eventually employers. Some families love the joke; it is worth deciding now whether you will still love it at a parent-teacher conference.
- The name is concentrated in Texas, Oklahoma and California and carries an unmistakably Western sound. Outside those regions it will read as a deliberate choice rather than a neutral one.
- Rowdy has the shape of a nickname without a formal name behind it, so there is no longer version to retreat to on a diploma. A more conventional middle name gives that option back.
