Our story of Kemani
Ours, offered as ours. Amani is one of the Swahili words that African-American and Caribbean naming took up deliberately from the 1970s, alongside Imani for faith, Nia for purpose and Kuumba for creativity — the Kwanzaa principles supplied a whole set of them. Kemani attaches the Ke- prefix to the peace one. The Swahili is real and the prefix is American, and the combination is exactly what a diaspora naming tradition produces.
Meaningnot established
Not established
No source is established for the compound. Swahili amani, peace, borrowed from Arabic aman, is documented and stands behind the -mani family. The Ke- prefix belongs to American naming and carries no meaning of its own.

The Salima test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Kemani's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Salima climbed just as high around 1976, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Salima's path sketches the road Kemani is walking now.
Kemani sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

- There is no documented meaning for the compound.
