Caol is the Gaelic word for narrow, and it is all over the map of Scotland and Ireland: a kyle is a narrow strait, Kyle of Lochalsh is named for one. The same word stands behind Kellan, so a name and a stretch of water share a root that means slim.

The story of Kellan
Ireland turned descriptions into surnames and then England stripped the surnames of their prefixes, so O Caollaidhe became Kealy, Keeley and Kellen, and the descriptive word underneath stopped being visible. Caol is still an ordinary Irish and Scottish Gaelic word — narrow, slim, thin — and it survives in English as kyle, the term for a strait, which is why so many Scottish sea-channels carry it. Kellan as a first name is recent. It appeared quietly in American records for decades and then rose sharply in the late 2000s, when an actor of that name appeared in a film series watched by an enormous number of teenagers; the timing is not a coincidence.

slender
Usually traced to Irish caol, narrow or slender, through the surname O Caollaidhe. A second account connects it to ceallach, the word behind Kelly, whose own meaning is disputed. Both are Irish and neither has been settled; what is certain is that the name reached English as a surname before it was ever a given name.

The Lizandra test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Kellan's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Lizandra climbed just as high around 1974, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Lizandra's path sketches the road Kellan is walking now.
Kellan sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Two syllables and a spelling that everyone reads correctly on sight.
- A documented Irish root that is still a living word in two languages.
- Kell works as a short form for either child.
- Kellen, Kelan and Kealan are all in use, so the spelling will be given often.
- The wave it rose on is very recent, and the name will date a child to it.
- The very few girls given this spelling will be read as boys on every form.
