Its American record follows Nigerian migration and peaks in 1995.

The story of Kelechi
Chi is one of the central concepts of Igbo thought, and it appears in an enormous number of names: Chinua, Chidi, Chioma, Chinwe, Kelechi, Ifeanyichukwu. Each is a short statement — Chidi means 'God exists', Chioma 'good God', Ifeanyichukwu 'nothing is impossible for God'. The names are given for circumstances of birth, family situation or thanksgiving, and they are meant to be understood. Nigerian migration to the United States grew substantially from the 1970s, and American birth records carry Igbo names from that period, with Kelechi peaking in the mid-1990s.
Meaning
thank God; give praise to God
Igbo kele means to thank or to greet, and Chi is the personal god or spiritual principle in Igbo belief — a concept without an exact English equivalent, sometimes translated as a personal deity or guardian spirit, and used since Christianisation for God. So Kelechi is an imperative: thank Chi. The construction is transparent to any Igbo speaker and the derivation is settled.

Three syllables, stress in the middle, with the ch said as in cheese. Igbo is a tonal language, so the name carries a pitch pattern that English speakers do not reproduce; the syllables themselves give no difficulty.

The Danil test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Kelechi's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Danil climbed just as high around 1955, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Danil's path sketches the road Kelechi is walking now.
