Where it comes from

Our story of Kayley

Ours, offered as ours. The Irish céilí is worth knowing about even if it is not the source. It began as the word for simply calling on a neighbor in the evening and became the word for a whole gathering — music, dancing, a house full of people. That is one of the better things a name could be near. The American Kayley almost certainly came from Kay plus an ending rather than from Ireland, and both facts can be held at once without pretending either is the other.

Meaningnot established

Not established

No source is established for the compound. Irish céilí, a social visit and then a gathering with music, is a real word and a real near-neighbor; the English surname Kayley and Kelly, from Irish Ó Caollaidhe, is another. The modern American name is generally treated as a construction from Kay and the -ley ending.

Kayley sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1999, with 461 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Kayley went to 45 girls in 2025, but Kailey, Cailey and Kaylei and the rest below are the same name said out loud. Together the 5 spellings went to 236, which makes it the 726th most-given girls’ name of the year — 2,663 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 6,810 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 35,717 for Kayley itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
